HP ANNOUNCES ENHANCED ELECTRONIC MESSAGING SOLUTION
ATLANTA, June 15, 1993 - Hewlett-Packard Company today
announced enhancements to its leading, enterprise wide
Electronic Messaging Solution. Based on HP OpenMail and X.400,
the Electronic Messaging Solution now offers strengthened
management capabilities, expanded support of desktop clients,
additional mail-enabled applications and gateways.
With this announcement, HP delivers an enterprisewide messaging
solution to meet user needs for desktop flexibility while
providing system administrators with powerful management capabilities.
"HP is taking the lead in electronic messaging by offering end
users choices without compromising the management of the e-mail
infrastructure," said Glenn Osaka, general manager of HP's Cooperative
Computing Systems Division. "Global firms now can establish a
standards-based messaging utility, that greatly expands the flow
of information across the enterprise."
IMPROVED MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES
HP OpenView Integration
HP announced integration of its Electronic Messaging Solution
with HP OpenView, the industry-standard network-and
system-management platform. This integration allows network
managers to monitor distributed messaging servers, networking
and system processes from a single, central graphical
workstation, which eliminates the need for e-mail administration
at remote sites.
With the integration of HP OpenView with HP OpenMail and X.400,
network managers can monitor message store disk usage, message
queues, and gateway status, and initiate administrative actions.
Additional features are designed to let HP OpenView managers
provide remote notification--via beeper or printer--of process
exceptions and resource constraints.
Directory Synchronization
Directory synchronization services now synchronize HP OpenMail
directories and SoftSwitch Central. Synchronized directories allow
end users to send messages to anyone in the enterprise without
requiring that they understand the details of different products'
addressing conventions. Directory synchronization also means
that end users have access to up-to-date addresses.
People Mover
New "people mover" utilities allow administrators to move HP
OpenMail users and their data easily between distributed nodes
in the network. This feature allows administrators to handle
business changes--such as employee transfers or system
consolidations--without complicated procedures or the creation
of new mailboxes.
IBM PROFS/OfficeVision/VM Migration Services
HP announced coexistence and migration services to the millions
of IBM PROFS users no longer supported by IBM and to IBM
OfficeVision/VM users who may want to migrate messaging from the
mainframe to HP's open systems backbone infrastructure.
HP's solution gives users a secure, centrally administered
messaging system that provides connectivity to other host systems,
LAN-based electronic mail systems, and choice of clients. HP offers
migration planning and consulting, conversion tools and training
to migrate users' notelogs, in-trays and documents safely and
quickly to HP OpenMail.
IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY
Choice of Mail Clients
HP today announced new electronic-mail user agents as Clients
of Choice for its standards-based messaging solution. This announcement
delivers on HP's strategy to provide customers with a choice of
desktop client applications that use its X.400, UNIX
system-based HP OpenMail server and messaging infrastructure.
The new applications allow customers to select a strategic
desktop platform and interface of their choice for access to the
messaging services they need.
HP now supports cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients as direct
clients to HP OpenMail. Windows users of both popular mail clients can
communicate with others throughout an enterprise using their
favorite interface, but with the security advantages of HP
OpenMail, an enterprise wide directory, and simple addressing.
The need for gateways, directory synchronization and dedicated
PC server post offices is eliminated, lowering the overall cost
of ownership.
HP also announced new versions of its own clients with a
similar look and feel across a wide range of desktops. These include
new HP interfaces for Apple Macintosh and SUN Solaris 2.1, and new
versions of existing interfaces for Windows and NewWave.
The new HP Windows client offers an iconic, graphical interface with
Bulletin Board access. The latest NewWave Mail release provides
acknowledgements and auto-actions.
Pricing for HP OpenMail has been reduced to reflect HP's
commitment to providing competitive solutions for end users.
Choice of Mail-enabled Applications
HP announced today the availability of a Phonebook application
which allows easy look-up access to the rich HP OpenMail directory.
The Phonebook application is available for Windows, Macintosh and
UNIX/Motif desktops.
HP's Electronic Messaging Solution offers unmatched support for
groupware both at an enterprisewide and departmental level.
Groupware and workflow applications are increasingly popular
tools that allow groups of people to work together efficiently
via electronic messaging. Because of its support for major
messaging APIs, including X/Open, MAPI, and VIM, HP can offer
organizations the open, flexible backbone they need to integrate
groupware and other mail-enabled applications into their
networks.
HP today announced an enhancement to its X.400 MTA with the
inclusion of the X/Open-APIA Gateway API in it's X.400 product.
The X/Open-APIA Gateway API is targeted to customers who require
extra flexibility and who wish to develop applications via a
standard API on an HP integrated messaging backbone.
HP plans to continue to ship its current HP X.400 High Level
API for simple electronic messaging applications.
Choice of Gateways and Conversion Services
HP also announced a joint marketing, sales, and support
agreement today with The Boston Software Works as a gateway supplier
for the HP Electronic Messaging Solution. BSW's new InterOFFICE
gateways for HP OpenMail and PROFS and OfficeVision/VM support
coexistence of user populations during migrations from a
mainframe to an HP Messaging Solution. BSW InterOFFICE gateways
also provide interoperability between HP OpenMail/X.400 and many
other office systems, including PC LANS.
HP announced that Worldtalk Corporation, whose standards-based
messaging integration is built upon HP's high-performance RISC-based
systems and uses HP's X.400 MTA, plans to extend Worldtalk's
directory synchronization capabilities. Worldtalk 400 now
synchronizes HP OpenMail, cc:Mail, and Microsoft Mail
directories.
Keyword Office Technologies has announced additional support
for HP's Electronic Messaging Solution. Keyword Office Technologies
announced KEYpak ODX.400 (Open Document Exchange) for HP's X.400
Message Transfer Agent (MTA). ODX.400 provides automatic in-transit
backbone document conversion of electronic-mail attachments between
over 20 different formats including most PC, workstation, and mainframe
as if theywere created in their preferred application regardless
of the environment from which they come.
SOLUTION SUPPORT
Because HP has tested and integrated the various components of
its Electronic Messaging Solution, HP can offer tailored solution-support
services to meet ongoing customer needs. With customized services, HP
can help avoid the problems customers face with multiple products from
multiple vendors. This frees businesses from the multivendor support
worries of bottom-up, component-based software, and bridges the gap
between the promise and reality of open systems.
Hewlett-Packard is an international manufacturer of computation
and measurement products and systems recognized for excellence
in quality and support. The company's products and services are
used in industry, business, engineering, science, medicine, and
education in approximately 110 countries. HP has over 93,000
employees and had revenue of $16.4 billion in its 1992 fiscal year.
